Getting ready for the FCPS OBG Part 2 Extended TOACS? You are now just one step away from becoming a certified fellow in obstetrics and gynaecology under CPSP. The TOACS stands for Task Oriented Assessment of Clinical Skills, and it is a modified term of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Apart from testing your clinical knowledge, this exam evaluates your communication skills, decision-making and professionalism.
You must have a clear idea about what’s coming. The exam is well-structured and task-oriented. The exam is divided into two major cases.
Case 1: Obstetrics – 60 minutes
Case 2: Gynaecology – 60 minutes
Don’t worry about the exam format. If you have come this far, you are already well-prepared. All that’s left is to revise smartly.
Last-minute preparation strategies
When the exam date approaches, it is very natural to feel anxious even if you are well prepared. So, a focused last-minute strategy is very important to improve your performance on the exam day.
Focus on common OBG scenarios
In the last few days, focus on the most important and frequently encountered cases rather than learning entirely new materials. Go through the basic steps in diagnosis and management. Refresh your knowledge on investigations, treatment plans and management protocols.
Practice thinking out loud
The exam is not only about knowing the answer but also about how you explain it. Try to speak your reasoning clearly while solving cases. It will help you stay confident during the actual exam.
Polish your communication skills
Clear communication is very important during the exam. Practise structuring your answers, which will help you improve fluency and organisation of thoughts. Practising with a peer or a mentor can also help improve communication skills.
Simulate real exam scenarios
Mock sessions can also be very effective. Set a timer, select random cases and practise as if you are in the actual exam. It will help you manage your time properly and prepare you to think quickly and clearly.
Review guidelines and protocols
Use the last few days to review important protocols. Try to focus on CPSP guidelines and, if possible, incorporate brief reviews from RCOG and WHO for selected topics.
Incorporating all these tips in the final days of preparation can improve your performance in the exam. Apart from all these, try to sleep well, stay calm and believe in your preparation.
