How to ace the FCPS exam: Detailed exam structure & effective strategies

The Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) is a prestigious postgraduate qualification in Pakistan, offered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). This qualification demonstrates advanced knowledge in a chosen medical or surgical speciality, making it a highly sought-after credential for career advancement.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding the FCPS exam structure and strategies to clear it efficiently.

Understanding the exam structure

FCPS Part 1

The journey towards the FCPS qualification begins with FCPS Part 1, which focuses on theoretical knowledge. This exam consists of two papers:

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2: Each paper contains 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), designed to test your understanding of fundamental medical sciences and core concepts. Approximately three hours are allowed to complete each paper.

FCPS Intermediate Module (IIM)

This part evaluates both the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills of the candidates. FCPS IIM Written will test the knowledge base, and FCPS IIM TOACS (The Objective Assessment of Clinical Skills) will test the clinical skills.

FCPS Part 2

The final stage is FCPS Part 2, which is divided into two parts:

  • Part 2 Written Exam: A paper-based test with 100 MCQs, evaluating advanced theoretical understanding relevant to your speciality.
  • Extended TOACS: This practical examination involves assessing clinical skills through two detailed case studies.

Key strategies for success

  • Structured study plan: Make a detailed study schedule that covers all topics in the syllabus.
  • Focused preparation: For FCPS Part 1, concentrate on core medical sciences and practice with past papers to familiarise yourself with question patterns. For the IIM and Part 2, dive deeper into speciality-specific knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Practise clinical scenarios: Regularly engage in clinical practice and simulations to enhance your practical skills. Participate in mock exams and TOACS practice sessions to build confidence.
  • Join study groups: Group study can provide valuable insights, help clarify doubts, and keep you motivated.
  • Maintain well-being: Ensure a balanced routine with adequate rest and nutrition.
