What is the FCPS exam, and what is its significance for medical professionals in Pakistan?

FCPS, short for Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, is one of the most recognised programmes for specialising in any particular field like medicine, paediatrics, surgery, or gynaecology, with its subspecialties.

FCPS Exam and Its Significance

The FCPS Exam is conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), which was established in 1962 and offers a great array of courses that provide quality post-graduate medical education and training for doctors.

FCPS is a four- to five-year course that lets one completely perfect their skills and knowledge in a particular field. FCPS is considered the gold standard of postgraduate medical education in Pakistan.

After FCPS, one gains eligibility to join academia as an assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. It also boasts higher career growth and a pay rise. FCPS is considered to be a level III qualification.

FCPS Exam Format

FCPS Pakistan consists of three exams that thoroughly evaluate and assess the aspirant’s medical prowess. The FCPS Part 1 exam is the first obstacle one must overcome, followed by IIM and Part 2.

FCPS Part 1 checks your theoretical knowledge with two theory papers, called Paper 1 and Paper 2 respectively. Each paper consists of 100 MCQs, lasting about three hours.

FCPS OBG IIM is the intermediate module exam that acts as a bridge between the Part 1 and Part 2 examinations. This tests aspirants theoretical and clinical prowess. FCPS OBG IIM Written will test the knowledge base, and FCPS OBG IIM TOACS will test one’s clinical skills.

FCPS OBG Part 2 also follows a similar format, with its two distinct parts testing the theoretical and practical sides.
